Punjab Government Unveils ₹2,60,437 Crore Budget Ahead of 2027 Polls
Chandigarh, March 8: Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Sunday presented the state budget for the financial year 2026-27 with a total allocation of ₹2,60,437 crore, stating that the government has fulfilled every promise made to the people since taking office in 2022.The budget marks the fifth financial plan of the Aam Aadmi Party government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and is the last full budget before the state heads for assembly elections scheduled for early 2027.
Budget Dedicated to Women of Punjab
While presenting the budget in the Punjab Assembly, Cheema said the 2026-27 budget is dedicated to the mothers and daughters of Punjab, describing it as a tribute to their strength and a recognition of their contributions to society and the future of the state.He noted that the government’s fifth budget represents an important milestone in its governance journey.
According to Cheema, the people of Punjab voted for change in March 2022, rejecting what he described as hollow politics and demanding a government committed to honesty, determination, and decisive action. He said the vision of a “Rangla Punjab” emerged from this mandate.
Tribute to People’s Resilience During Floods
During his address, the finance minister also acknowledged the resilience of Punjab’s residents during the devastating floods that struck the state last year.He said communities across Punjab came together during the crisis, supporting each other as homes were submerged and livelihoods were disrupted. Cheema praised the spirit of unity shown by citizens in rebuilding their lives with patience and determination.
Government Claims Fulfilment of All Guarantees
Cheema said the Aam Aadmi Party government had resolved from the beginning of its tenure that its promises to the people would not remain symbolic commitments.Addressing the Assembly, he said it is rare for a government in the fifth year of its term to confidently state that every promise made to the people has been fulfilled.
The finance minister said these guarantees were implemented through structured policy interventions supported by budget allocations, institutional reforms, and measurable outcomes.
He announced that the 2026-27 financial plan has been titled “Saari Guarantiyan Puri Karan Wala Budget”, highlighting the government’s claim of delivering on its commitments.
Punjab Economy Shows Stability and Growth
Cheema also presented the state’s economic outlook for the upcoming fiscal year. Punjab’s Gross State Domestic Product is projected to reach ₹9,80,635 crore in 2026-27 with an expected growth rate of 10 percent.According to the budget estimates, the effective revenue deficit is projected at 2.06 percent of the GSDP, while the fiscal deficit is expected to stand at 4.08 percent of GSDP.
The finance minister said these projections reflect the government’s effort to maintain responsible fiscal management while continuing to support economic growth and public welfare programs across the state.
