NTPC Signs Non-Binding MoU with EDF to Explore Nuclear Power Cooperation

NTPC Limited has signed a Non-Binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Électricité de France (EDF) to explore cooperation in developing new nuclear power projects in India. The agreement, formalized on April 8, 2026, follows approvals from the concerned ministries and departments of the Government of India.

The MoU was executed by Mr Arnada Prasad Samal, CGM (Nuclear Cell), representing NTPC, and Mr Vakisasi Ramany, Senior Vice President, International Nuclear Development, on behalf of EDF.

Framework for Joint Collaboration

The agreement establishes a framework for both entities to jointly assess the feasibility and approach for collaboration. Key areas slated for exploration include understanding EDF's EPR technology and its suitability for Indian requirements. Furthermore, the partnership intends to examine opportunities to maximize localization for large-scale deployment, review economic and tariff aspects, develop human resource capabilities through training programs, evaluate potential project sites, and provide mutual technical support.

This venture aligns with NTPC's strategy to expand into clean, reliable energy and bolster India's long-term energy security.

NTPC's Energy Capacity and Future Outlook

NTPC Limited, described as India's largest integrated power utility, currently operates more than 89 GW of installed capacity, with an additional 32 GW presently under construction. The company has set a goal to achieve a total capacity of 149 GW by 2032. This expansion target includes 60 GW sourced from renewable energy.

The planned mix of power generation sources is designed to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity, incorporating thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power plants. Beyond power generation, NTPC has diversified its involvement into several new business areas, including e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen solutions.

NTPC Stock Price Movement

Today, NTPC Limited shares edged higher to settle at ₹374.15, marking a gain of 1.13% for the day. The stock closed out its session fueled by investor interest, recording a total traded volume of 19.49 million shares.
