MSRTC Reintroduces 3x2 Seating Buses After Two Decades

New Bus Service Launch

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has reintroduced 3x2 seating buses into its fleet after nearly two decades, officials announced. The move aims to improve passenger comfort and efficiency.

The buses feature a 3x2 seating configuration, with a total capacity of 56 seats. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the ‘Rajmata Jijau’ smart bus service with this facility at the state legislature complex in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, were present at the launch. The MSRTC stated that nearly 3,000 ‘Rajmata Jijau’ buses with a 3x2 seating arrangement will be inducted in phases, strengthening public transport services across Maharashtra.

The new buses are equipped with modern passenger amenities and safety features, including CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, panic buttons, public announcement systems, and electronic destination boards.

MSRTC phased out 3x2 buses approximately 20 years ago, replacing them with 2x2 ‘Parivartan’ buses as part of a fleet modernization initiative. The 2x2 buses gained popularity due to their spaciousness and comfort, particularly on urban routes. However, passengers on crowded rural or semi-urban routes expressed dissatisfaction with the seating arrangement.

The 3x2 arrangement is expected to primarily operate as a shuttle service on high-density intercity routes, reducing travel time and easing congestion. The initial deployment of 50 buses will commence in Nagpur.

The service’s naming honors Jijabai, a historical figure considered a key inspiration for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the concept of Hindavi Swarajya.
