
Women Emerge as Key Beneficiaries of Make in India Initiative
Women have emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of the Make in India initiative, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday, highlighting the large-scale job creation and skill development driven by the manufacturing push.The IT Minister stated that the flagship programme has generated employment and provided training at an unprecedented scale, strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem across sectors.
Apple Ecosystem Generates 10 Lakh Jobs, 70% Direct Workforce Women
According to Vaishnaw, the Apple ecosystem alone has created at least 2.5 lakh direct jobs in India, with nearly 70 per cent of these positions filled by women. In addition to direct employment, the ecosystem has generated at least 7.5 lakh indirect jobs, significantly expanding opportunities across the value chain.In a post on X, the minister said India is preparing a skilled workforce for the next phase of electronics manufacturing, covering advanced segments such as robotics, drones, electric vehicles, smart cars, precision components, advanced tooling, and smart glasses.
PLI Scheme Attracts ₹2.16 Lakh Crore Investment, Creates 14.39 Lakh Jobs
The Production-Linked Incentive scheme has attracted investments of over ₹2.16 lakh crore in the manufacturing sector as of December 31, 2025. The scheme has created more than 14.39 lakh direct and indirect jobs, reflecting its expanding footprint across industries.According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, cumulative sales from manufacturing units set up under the scheme have crossed ₹20.41 lakh crore. Exports from these units have exceeded ₹8.3 lakh crore.
The government has disbursed ₹28,748 crore in production-linked incentives under the scheme so far.
Mobile Phone Imports Drop 77% Since FY21
India’s mobile phone manufacturing landscape has witnessed a structural shift. Imports of mobile phones have declined by nearly 77 per cent since FY 2020 to 21. Over 99 per cent of domestic demand is now being met through local production.Manufacturing operations have moved beyond basic assembly to include printed circuit board assemblies, batteries, camera and display modules, enclosures, and other critical sub-assemblies. This has enabled deeper integration with global value chains.
India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 and ₹40,000 Crore Component Push
Domestic manufacturing capacity for IT hardware has expanded with progressive localisation of components, reducing dependence on imports.In the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, along with an increased outlay of ₹40,000 crore for electronics component manufacturing.
The move aims to strengthen local production, boost innovation, and create additional direct and indirect employment opportunities, reinforcing India’s position in the global electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
