Cabinet Unlocks Jaipur's Future: Phase-2 Metro Set to Transform City Mobility with ₹13,037.66 Crore Boost

Union Cabinet Approves Landmark Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Corridor

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has officially greenlit the ambitious Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project. This transformative 41 km North-South corridor, spanning from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, will feature 36 new stations.

The total estimated cost for this crucial infrastructure development stands at ₹13,037.66 crore. Implementation responsibility has been assigned to the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL). This entity operates as a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan.

Integrating City Life: Connectivity Boost Across Jaipur

Phase-2 is designed to weave seamless connectivity into Jaipur's major activity nodes. These vital areas include the Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar.

A key highlight of the new phase is the inclusion of underground stations within the airport area. This new stretch promises to integrate with the existing Phase-1 network. The integration will be achieved through planned interchanges and dedicated feeder systems, ensuring a unified city-wide metro backbone.

Enhancing Urban Mobility and Public Transport Share

The existing Jaipur Metro Phase-1 currently services the shorter 11.64 km East-West corridor, connecting Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar. This operational line features 11 stations, linking key residential and commercial zones with Jaipur's central business district, the Heritage Walled City.

With the addition of Phase-2 along the North-South axis, the city will gain true citywide, pan-Jaipur metro connectivity. The combination of both corridors is anticipated to significantly ease current traffic congestion across the metropolis.

Strong Viability Signals and Future Growth Projection

Even the operational Phase-1 records an average daily ridership of approximately 60,000 passengers on its segment. The commissioning of Phase-2 is projected to trigger a manifold increase in ridership across the entire network.

Experts suggest this expansion will substantially boost the share of public transport within Jaipur, thereby reducing the city's dependence on private vehicles. The project's strong socio-economic viability was underlined by its Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) being more than the threshold of >14%.

Strategic Alignment with State and National Development Goals

The planning for Jaipur Metro Phase-2 underwent rigorous evaluation, including reviews by the Inter-Ministerial Consultation, the Network Planning Group, and the Public Investment Board.

The project's funding structure is detailed, relying on equity support from the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, along with subordinate debt and multilateral financing, adhering to the Metro Rail Policy, 2017. This development aligns closely with the Rajasthan TOD Policy-2025 and proposed UMTA reforms.

Targeting completion by September 2031, the metro expansion is poised to significantly lower vehicular emissions and enhance mobility for all residents, workers, and tourists. It solidifies Jaipur's trajectory as a modern, future-ready city, advancing the vision for Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rajasthan.
