US Army Awards Up to $20 Billion Contract to Anduril Industries for Defense Technology

Pentagon Signs Long Term Deal to Accelerate Software Driven Military Capabilities

The United States Army has awarded defense technology company Anduril Industries a contract worth up to $20 billion for the procurement of software, hardware, and related services. The Department of Defense said the agreement is designed to accelerate the delivery of advanced technology capabilities to soldiers.

The announcement was made on Friday evening by the Department’s Office of the Chief Information Officer.

“The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by software. To maintain our advantage, we must be able to acquire and deploy software capabilities quickly and efficiently,” said Gabe Chiulli, Chief Technology Officer for the Department’s Office of the Chief Information Officer.

Ten Year Procurement Framework

The agreement establishes a unified procurement vehicle that will run for a total potential duration of 10 years. The structure includes a five year base period followed by an additional five year optional ordering period.

According to the Army, the contracting framework is designed to streamline the acquisition process. It is expected to remove additional charges from subcontractors billed to the Pentagon, accelerate delivery timelines, and generate cost efficiencies.

Chiulli said enterprise contracts form an important part of the military’s modernization strategy.

“Enterprise contracts are a key part of our modernization strategy,” he said.

Growing Role of Technology Startups in Defense

The deal highlights the Pentagon’s increasing reliance on venture backed technology companies to support military modernization through software driven systems.

Anduril Industries, founded in 2017 by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, focuses on autonomous defense technologies. Its portfolio includes drones, counter drone interceptors, sensor networks, and advanced command and control systems.

AI Powered Battlefield Systems

One of the company’s key technologies is its Lattice command and control platform. The system uses artificial intelligence to combine data from sensors and battlefield systems to create a unified operational picture for military commanders.

Based in Costa Mesa, California, Anduril positions itself as a faster moving alternative to traditional defense contractors. The company follows a Silicon Valley style development approach, building technology systems rapidly and then offering them to the military.

The contract underscores the Pentagon’s broader push to adopt modern, software centric defense capabilities as part of its evolving military strategy.
