$16.9 Billion Publicly Funded BharatNet to Expand Rural Broadband Nationwide​

New Delhi, February 23: The amended BharatNet programme, a $16.9 billion initiative equivalent to ₹1,39,000 crore in public funding, is set to bring optical fibre and broadband connectivity to every village across the country, including those in Andhra Pradesh, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Monday.

Describing the initiative as a transformative step, Scindia said the programme aims to democratize technology for every citizen. He noted that technology has enabled talent, ambition, and aspiration to reach the global stage, and the expanded BharatNet will extend similar opportunities to rural India.

MoC Signed to Accelerate Amended BharatNet Program in Andhra Pradesh​

A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between Digital Bharat Nidhi, the Department of Telecommunications, and the Andhra Pradesh government to expedite the rollout of the Amended BharatNet Program in the state.

Minister of State Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said the agreement provides a structured and sustainable framework under a state-led model, combining financial support with accountability. He added that the partnership will strengthen last-mile connectivity, expand 4G saturation, and ensure affordable and reliable digital services reach rural citizens.

₹2,432 Crore Financial Support Approved for Andhra Pradesh​

The Centre has approved ₹2,432 crore in financial support for implementing the programme in Andhra Pradesh. Funding will be primarily provided by Digital Bharat Nidhi, with contributions from the state government as per mutually agreed arrangements.

The state government will extend full support to ensure faster execution, including facilitation of Right of Way, infrastructure access, and necessary coordination for smooth implementation.

Over Five Lakh Rural Home Fibre Connections Expected​

The amended BharatNet initiative in Andhra Pradesh is expected to facilitate more than five lakh rural home fibre connections with government financial backing. The expanded network is projected to significantly enhance digital governance and improve the delivery of citizen-centric services.

The programme is also expected to promote online education, digital payments, e-governance, and telemedicine across rural and remote areas, strengthening the digital ecosystem and boosting socio-economic development in the state.
