AI Impact Summit Highlights 26 Groundbreaking Studies Transforming Smallholder Farming​

New Delhi, February 17: Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant promise for agriculture. From smart necklaces tracking cattle health in Kashmir to satellite systems predicting sugarcane sweetness with 95 per cent accuracy, AI is already generating measurable outcomes for millions of smallholder farmers.

Speaking at the AI Impact Summit in the national capital, Maharashtra Resident Commissioner R Vimala said the technology is reaching farmers across regions and income groups.

"AI is not just for the privileged few. It's for every farmer in every corner of the Global South," she said at the launch of a compendium documenting 26 groundbreaking studies under the AI Casebook on Gender and Agriculture.

MahaVISTAAR-AI Platform Reaches 2.2 Million Farmers​

One of the flagship initiatives highlighted was MahaVISTAAR-AI, a conversational platform developed by the Maharashtra Department of Agriculture in May 2025.

Since its launch, the platform has delivered personalized crop advisories to 2.2 million farmers.

"That's not disruption, it's transformation at scale," Vimala said, underscoring the shift from experimental pilots to large-scale implementation.

The platform represents a move toward tailored, data-driven guidance for farmers, replacing generic advisories with localized recommendations.

Portable Soil Testing Devices Cut Wait Times, Boost Yields​

Under the Vasudha and Neo Park programmes, portable soil testing devices using hyperspectral imaging are enabling on-the-spot analysis of soil chemistry.

These devices deliver a complete soil chemical profile with over 90 per cent accuracy, eliminating laboratory wait times that previously stretched into weeks.

When combined with satellite data, the results are translating into tangible productivity gains. Farmers using these tools are reporting yield increases ranging from 20 per cent to 32 per cent.

Satellite Data Predicts Sugarcane Sucrose Levels With 95 Per Cent Accuracy​

The compendium also highlights the work of Mapmycrop, which is using super-resolution satellite imagery to predict sucrose levels in sugarcane with 95 per cent accuracy.

This precision has led to a 57 per cent improvement in yields, demonstrating how remote sensing technologies can directly influence farm-level output.

The same satellite infrastructure is also being leveraged to generate credit scores for farmers. This innovation has reduced loan approval timelines from weeks to days, expanding access to formal finance.

AI-Driven MRV Frameworks Accelerate Sustainable Farming Validation​

Platforms such as RMS for AI and Varaha are deploying monitoring, reporting, and verification frameworks to validate sustainable agricultural practices.

In Punjab, these systems are assessing alternative wetting and drying techniques in paddy cultivation within minutes. Earlier, such validation processes required months of manual monitoring.

By accelerating verification, these AI-powered systems are helping scale sustainable practices more efficiently.

Smart Necklaces in Kashmir Detect Infections Before Symptoms​

In Kashmir, livestock health is being monitored through AI-powered smart necklaces fitted on cattle.

These devices track rumination patterns and body temperature, flagging infections and heat stress days before visible symptoms appear. Early detection enables timely intervention, reducing losses and improving animal welfare.

Focus on Outcomes, Not Promises​

Vimala emphasized that the compendium stands apart because it documents achieved outcomes rather than projected possibilities.

The studies capture measurable improvements in yields, cost savings, pesticide reduction, and expanded access for women farmers.

"The future of agriculture isn't just about feeding 10 billion people. It's about doing it equitably, sustainably, and with dignity," she said.

As the AI Impact Summit continues, the documented cases signal a shift in agricultural transformation, where artificial intelligence is embedded into everyday farming practices, delivering scale, speed, and inclusivity across regions.
