Thane Civic Bodies Report Strong Rise in Tax Collections for FY26 Amid Digital Push and Recovery Drives

Thane, April 2: Civic bodies across Maharashtra’s Thane district have reported a notable increase in tax collections for the financial year 2025-26, supported by intensified recovery efforts, amnesty schemes, and a growing shift toward digital payment systems, according to officials.

Thane Municipal Corporation Sees Digital Surge in Collections

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) recorded tax collections of Rs 878.37 crore, marking an increase from Rs 810 crore in the previous year. A significant highlight was the adoption of digital payment modes, with 87.37 percent of taxpayers opting for online transactions.

The Majiwada-Manpada ward emerged as the top contributor, generating Rs 236.51 crore in revenue.

“Taxpayers have shown immense trust in our technology-based options,” said TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao, emphasizing the role of digital infrastructure in boosting compliance.

Navi Mumbai Records Highest-Ever Tax Collection

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) reported its highest-ever tax collection at Rs 876 crore, compared to Rs 812 crore in the previous financial year.

Officials attributed the growth to the use of Artificial Intelligence-driven calling systems and data analytics to identify and engage defaulters.

The ‘Abhay Yojana’ amnesty scheme, which provided a 50 percent waiver on penalties, played a key role, contributing Rs 192.81 crore in March alone.

NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde stated that administrative transparency and technology integration were central to achieving this milestone.

Bhiwandi Nizampur and Mira Bhayander Post Gains

The Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) collected Rs 103.31 crore, up from Rs 87.54 crore last year. Municipal Commissioner Anmol Sagar highlighted enforcement actions such as 1,300 seizure notices and the disconnection of 5,142 water connections as contributing factors.

Similarly, the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation reported tax collections of Rs 254.09 crore, rising from Rs 230 crore in the previous year.

KDMC Sees Slight Decline Without Amnesty Scheme

In contrast, the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) reported a marginal decline in collections, recording Rs 431.49 crore compared to Rs 453 crore last year. The civic body did not implement the Abhay amnesty scheme during FY26, which may have impacted recovery levels.

Digital Adoption and Policy Measures Drive Revenue Growth

The overall trend across Thane district highlights how technology adoption, targeted recovery strategies, and policy interventions like amnesty schemes have strengthened municipal revenue collections, even as results varied across civic bodies depending on local measures and implementation.
